How to Get a Canadian SIN After Citizenship by Descent

Your Canadian citizenship certificate qualifies you for a Social Insurance Number (SIN), the nine-digit identifier that unlocks work, investment accounts, and government benefits in Canada. The certificate counts as a primary identity document for Service Canada, so you can apply as soon as it arrives, even before you have a Canadian passport.

A SIN is Canada's equivalent of a Social Security Number. Every person who works in Canada, files a Canadian tax return, or accesses federal programs needs one. Canadian citizens receive a permanent SIN, with a prefix between 1 and 8, that never expires. Temporary workers receive a SIN starting with 9 that expires when their permit does.

Your SIN is assigned once and stays with you for life.

The SIN is required for:

• Working in Canada. Every employer must collect your SIN before issuing your first paycheque. This is a legal requirement under the Income Tax Act.
• Investment accounts. RRSPs, TFSAs, and any interest-bearing account require a SIN so the institution can report taxable income to the Canada Revenue Agency. Before opening a TFSA or RRSP, get your SIN first.
• Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security. If you work in Canada long enough, your CPP contributions and eventual OAS claims are tracked by SIN.
• Filing Canadian tax returns. If you move to Canada and become a tax resident, every T1 general return begins with your SIN.

The SIN is NOT required to:

• Apply for a Canadian passport
• Enter Canada by air, land, or sea
• Open a basic chequing account without interest
• Receive your citizenship certificate

If you are staying in the US and mainly want a Canadian passport, you do not need a SIN right now. If you plan to work or invest in Canada, get your SIN before you arrive.

The eSIN portal at sin-nas.canada.ca is available 24 hours a day and accepts applications from anywhere in the world, including US addresses. You upload a scan of your citizenship certificate and a secondary ID. Service Canada sends your SIN by mail within five business days. There is no fee.

The eSIN system accepts citizenship certificates issued by IRCC as the primary identity document. Your secondary document can be a US passport, US driver's license, or another government-issued photo ID.

Walk into any Service Canada Centre with your original citizenship certificate and one secondary ID. You receive a SIN confirmation letter on the spot. Processing is immediate, and the confirmation letter is enough to give your employer the same day while the physical SIN card follows by mail.

If you are visiting Canada after your certificate arrives, this is the fastest path. A Service Canada appointment typically takes 20 to 30 minutes.

Mail your original citizenship certificate (not a copy) along with your secondary ID and a completed SIN application form to Service Canada. Processing takes about 20 days from receipt. Service Canada returns your original documents once processing is complete.

Service Canada is not responsible for documents lost in transit, so use tracked mail with a record of what you sent. The online option avoids this risk entirely.

You cannot substitute a photocopy or notarized copy for the primary document when applying in person or by mail. The eSIN portal accepts scanned uploads, which is why most applicants outside Canada use it.

The eSIN portal accepts international mailing addresses, and there is no requirement to be physically in Canada when you apply online. Your SIN card arrives by mail at whatever address you provide, including a US address. Most dual citizens living in the US complete the whole thing in about 15 minutes and receive their SIN within a week.

One practical note: if you plan to open a Canadian bank account during a visit to Canada, get your SIN first if you want an interest-bearing account. Banks can open a basic chequing account without a SIN, but they need one for accounts that earn interest or for TFSA and RRSP contributions. 1. Receive citizenship certificate from IRCC (currently 33 months from application)
2. Apply for Canadian passport (4 to 8 weeks by mail)
3. Apply for SIN via eSIN portal (5 business days, can do this in parallel with passport)
4. Use passport for air travel to Canada; use SIN for work, banking, and investment accounts
