After you mail your CIT 0001 package to IRCC in Sydney, there are two reliable ways to check where it stands: the ECAS (Client Application Status) tool at services3.cic.gc.ca/ecas, which requires no login, and your IRCC Secure Account, which shows more detail. Both are free. Both update daily. You cannot use either one until IRCC sends your Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR), which arrives by mail within 4-8 weeks of IRCC receiving your package.
Your AOR contains two numbers you'll need for all status inquiries: your application number (a letter followed by digits) and your UCI (Unique Client Identifier), an 8 or 10-digit number formatted as 0000-0000 or 00-0000-0000.
How to Check Your CIT 0001 Application Status with ECAS
ECAS is the fastest option. No account setup required.
- Go to services3.cic.gc.ca/ecas
- Select "Check your application status" and choose "Citizenship" as the application type
- Enter your identification number (UCI or application number), your surname, your date of birth, and your country of birth
- Your current status appears immediately
The tool updates once per day, usually overnight. Checking it multiple times in a single day shows the same result. Once a month is sufficient for most applicants.
Using Your IRCC Secure Account
The IRCC Secure Account at canada.ca shows the same overall status as ECAS, plus section-level detail: which parts of your application have been reviewed, which are still in the queue, and whether any section is waiting for you to provide additional information.
To set up an account, go to canada.ca and sign in using GCKey or a Sign-In Partner (a participating Canadian bank such as TD, RBC, or Scotiabank). If you submitted a paper CIT 0001, link your application to the account using your UCI and application number.
Inside your dashboard, go to "View my submitted applications or profiles" to see your citizenship certificate application.
What the Status Messages Mean
Received: IRCC has your application and is confirming completeness. This typically lasts a few weeks.
In Process: Your application is under active review, including document verification, ancestry chain confirmation, and background checks. This is the longest stage. As of September 2026, the standard processing window is 33 months. Seeing "In Process" for 12, 18, or 24 months is expected. It is not a sign that anything went wrong.
Decision Made: IRCC has reached a conclusion. For citizenship by descent applications, this almost always means approval. Your certificate is printed and mailed shortly after this status appears, typically within 2-4 weeks.
Waiting on You: An officer has sent you a request for additional documents or information. This is the only status that requires immediate action. Check your IRCC account messages and your physical mail. IRCC typically allows 90 days to respond. A slow response extends your processing time and in some cases can result in the application being returned.
Not Started / Completed: These sub-statuses appear for individual sections within your application. "Not Started" means that section is in the queue. "Completed" means an officer has finished reviewing it and signed off.
Some applications are routed to a specialized queue called PSU (Priority and Special Unit) during processing. If your status references PSU, the PSU guide explains what that means and what to do next.
When and How to Contact IRCC
The IRCC webform is the right tool for specific questions after submitting. Go to canada.ca and search "IRCC web form." Choose the category for your application type, then include: your UCI, your application number, the date your AOR was issued, and a specific question in 2-3 sentences. Response time for citizenship inquiries runs 14-30 days in 2026.
By phone: 1-888-242-2100 from within Canada, or 1-613-944-4000 from outside Canada. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm local time. Have your application number ready before calling.
The key rule: IRCC asks applicants not to contact them about processing times until their application has exceeded the posted processing window. As of September 2026, that window is 33 months. Contacting IRCC before that point does not produce useful information and does not speed up processing.
If your status shows "Waiting on You," respond immediately regardless of where you are in the timeline.
A Practical Scenario
Marcus submitted his CIT 0001 in March 2026, tracing his citizenship through a great-grandmother born in Ontario. IRCC received his package at the Sydney case processing centre in early April. His AOR arrived by mail in mid-April with his UCI and application number.
He bookmarked the ECAS page and checked it once in May (status: Received). By June it had moved to "In Process," where it stayed on every check through September 2026. Nothing had changed, and nothing was supposed to. His 33-month window means a decision is not expected before late 2028. He set a calendar reminder to check quarterly and moved on.
In November 2027, his IRCC account showed "Waiting on You." IRCC had sent a letter requesting a certified copy of his great-grandmother's marriage certificate to confirm a name change on her birth record. Marcus uploaded the document within a week. His status returned to "In Process" ten days later.
Once Decision Made Appears
Your certificate is being printed and mailed. No action is needed from you. Delivery to a US address typically takes 2-3 weeks after the decision. Once it arrives, you can apply for a Canadian passport at any Service Canada office or through the online passport portal.
MaplePass builds your complete CIT 0001 package and flags documentation gaps before you mail anything. A clean, complete application is the best way to stay in the standard queue and avoid a "Waiting on You" flag. Start at getmaplepass.com.
