If you move while your CIT 0001 citizenship certificate application is pending, update your address with IRCC immediately using the Change of Address tool at services3.cic.gc.ca/ecas. The tool is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and your file updates within 5 business days.
With processing times now running over 33 months, many applicants move at least once before their certificate arrives. IRCC mails the finished certificate to the address on file, and sends document requests the same way. An outdated address means a missed certificate, a missed request, and potentially an abandoned application.
Change Your Address with IRCC During CIT 0001 Processing
Before starting, have your Unique Client Identifier (UCI) ready. This is an 8- or 10-digit number that appears on your acknowledgment of receipt letter and on every document IRCC has sent you. You can also use your application number (a letter followed by digits) or your passport number as an alternative.
Go to services3.cic.gc.ca/ecas and select the Change of Address option. Enter your date of birth and place of birth exactly as they appear on your application. Even a small formatting difference, like "US" instead of "United States," can block the form. If it rejects your entry, switch to your alternate identifier and try again.
Your new address will be active on your file within 5 business days. Keep checking mail at your current address during that window in case anything was already in transit.
Timing: Notify IRCC no more than 3 weeks before your move date. Submitting too far in advance routes IRCC's correspondence to an address you haven't moved into yet. After your move, notify IRCC as promptly as possible, within the first week or two. Canada's citizenship rules require applicants to disclose material changes in circumstances; failing to notify is not just inconvenient, it can create grounds to treat correspondence as properly delivered even if you never saw it.
As a backup during the transition, pay Canada Post to forward mail from your old address for 60 days. This catches anything that was already in transit when your IRCC file updates.
What If IRCC Already Mailed Your Certificate to an Old Address
This situation is more common than you'd expect. Processing is slow and irregular, and certificates can be approved and shipped with little warning.
Consider: you filed in January 2026, moved to a new apartment in October 2027 and updated your IRCC address the same week. But IRCC had printed and mailed your certificate four days before your update took effect. It arrived at your former building, where the new tenant signed for it and then lost track of it.
If this happens, contact IRCC through the web form on canada.ca (search "IRCC web form") without delay. Choose the contact information or application-specific category and explain clearly: your UCI, your move date, the date you updated your address, and the address that received the certificate. Uncollected certified mail is typically held for a period and then returned to IRCC, which makes resolution easier than if it simply disappeared. IRCC can arrange for a reissued document once the situation is confirmed.
Avoid this entirely by keeping your address current. Set a reminder to verify your IRCC contact information every six months during the processing period.
Other Changes to Notify IRCC About While Your CIT 0001 Is Pending
Address is the most common update, but not the only one that matters during a long application wait.
Legal name change: If you marry, divorce, or obtain a court-ordered name change while your CIT 0001 is in process, notify IRCC through the web form and attach documentary proof. IRCC issues the citizenship certificate in the name on file at the time of approval. A name change you don't report means the certificate arrives with your former legal name, and correcting it afterward requires a separate application and fee.
Phone number and email: Update these through the dedicated page at secure.cic.gc.ca/ClientContact, or through the same Change of Address tool at services3.cic.gc.ca/ecas, which covers all contact fields.
Passport number: If your US passport renews during the processing period, update your passport number on file. IRCC sometimes locates files by passport number, and your identification should stay current with your active travel document.
If the Change of Address Tool Doesn't Work
The online tool requires your entered data to match the information on your application exactly. If the tool rejects your entry after trying multiple identifier combinations, use the IRCC web form as a fallback.
Choose the subject "Give information about a change to my application or to update my contact information." In the body, include your UCI, your old address, your new address, and the effective date of your move.
Web form updates take significantly longer, up to 30 days in some cases. Use the online tool whenever possible; the web form is a backup, not a first choice.
