Processing time for a Canadian citizenship certificate hit 33 months in September 2026. Family emergency travel. If a close family member has died or is critically ill and you need to travel to Canada, and you cannot obtain a passport from your other country in time, IRCC can expedite on this basis. Upcoming travel to Canada. IRCC confirmed in 2026 that dual citizens of visa-exempt countries can request urgent processing if they have booked air travel to Canada within six months. Your flight booking with proof of payment is the required evidence.
Renouncing another citizenship by a deadline. If another country requires you to renounce citizenship by a specific date, and their renunciation process requires a Canadian citizenship certificate as a precondition, the deadline is your qualifying reason. Access to social benefits. If you need the certificate to obtain a Social Insurance Number, enroll in provincial health insurance, or collect a pension, IRCC can expedite on this basis. A notice from Service Canada, a pension authority, or a provincial health authority strengthens the request.
Harm or hardship. IRCC uses this as a catch-all for specific risks tied to not being able to prove Canadian status. The situation must be concrete and documented, not general.
What Does Not Qualify
General impatience does not qualify. Wanting a passport sooner, planning a vacation, or simply not wanting to wait 33 months are not grounds for expedited review. The urgency must be tied to a specific near-term event, deadline, or loss that a delayed certificate makes materially worse.
IRCC also warns explicitly: do not submit a second application to try to speed things up. A duplicate application is rejected, and the original standard-queue application continues processing as normal. There is no workaround that bypasses the queue entirely except the formal urgent request.
What the Letter Should Say
Keep the letter to one or two paragraphs. State the specific reason, the specific date or deadline, and why that deadline cannot be extended or met another way. Attach the supporting evidence: employer letter, school conditional offer, doctor's note, death certificate, flight booking. Longer letters do not outperform shorter, specific ones. A clear single paragraph with solid attached documents is what gets approved.
